I would like to take a few minutes to make an announcement that I am very proud of! I want to welcome a very special person to the 1st Phorm family. His name is Brett Becker. Brett is a top level amateur bodybuilder that has been competing for over 10 years. Brett began his bodybuilding career at 165 lbs back in 1999 and most recently competed in the 2009 Junior Nationals at 224 lbs! His progress speaks for itself. He has had tremendous success making the most out of his God given ability. However, this has very little to do with why we decided to bring Brett in to share his knowledge. It was something else that actually sparked our interest in inviting Brett to write for us.
Let me first say, over my many years in this industry I have met many wonderful individuals that participate in the sport of bodybuilding. I have never deemed a successful bodybuilder as someone who wins every show. I feel like there are a lot of other factors and limitations at play there to judge people based on the place they finish in a bodybuilding competition. In my personal opinion, I see everyone who diets and competes as achieving a victory and worthy of praise. That is where the respect comes from in bodybuilding…it’s the brotherhood. Everyone knows the sacrifices made to get in that kind of shape and they all respect it. Everyone works their ass off to become better! That is what I think makes the sport of bodybuilding so great.
However, there has always been an element to the sport of bodybuilding that has really disturbed me. As many great and inspiring people I have met that are bodybuilders, I have met just as many that are so screwed up that it makes me wonder how they even function. A lot of these people have no job, no education, no relationships, no friends….only bodybuilding. The reality is, most of the second type of people are freakin jerks too! All they have is bodybuilding. They’re the people in the gym mean muggin everyone and trying to look like a bad ass. There is a severe lack of balance in their lives and it is not healthy. These are the people that give the sport of bodybuilding a bad rep with the main stream public. These people are the stereotypes we all hate! This is an aspect of the sport that I cannot stand and refuse to help promote. Brett Becker is a shining example of the polar opposite of the group I described above.
Brett has years and years of applied bodybuilding knowledge through experience, not to mention a medical background as a registered nurse. He has very deep knowledge of nutrition and supplementation. All that taken into consideration, I still feel that is not Brett’s greatest asset. I feel Brett’s greatest value to all of us is in how he leads his life. It is evident from the way he trains, the way he eats, to his dedication to his son Brady and his fiancee Gillian, to the way he treats patients he comes in contact with on a daily basis…he’s a first class individual. He is an educated, hard working, dedicated family man and although he is a top level bodybuilder, that is not all he is. Brett understands what bodybuilding should be, a means to a richer, more fulfilling existence. We at 1st Phorm feel like he has a lot to teach all of us about what it takes to truly succeed in life. To Brett Never Settle isn’t just a slogan…it’s a way of life and that’s why we are very proud to welcome him to the team. He is a huge asset to the 1st Phorm team and a huge asset to all of you as well!
Welcome Brett, we couldn’t be more proud to have you as a part of the team!
