Relationships with Different Lifestyles

2 min read

Often people ask me how do you make a relationship work when one of the individuals is someone who cares about health, fitness and nutrition but the other doesn’t. Well that my friends is no easy hill to climb.

When you find yourself begging your partner to go to the gym with you it has to be done nice and gentle. DON’T do what my guy friend did and suggest to his wife to go to the gym with him cause she has put on an extra 30 lbs since college. This was not my friends moment to shine. This will get you a divorce faster than an add-on to your gym membership. My suggestion is to try something sweet.  Say  “Oh babe look they have classes for spin, le’s try them together”.   Or “ Babe this gym I have been going to is so nice you should go with me! It would be fun and it’s something we could do together”. See these are positive and encouraging ways to suggest working out, not to mention spending time together if you’re both very busy individuals.

Now when you get your mate in there sweating with you, don’t beat them up the first time. This will make them NOT come back, and that’s not our goal.  So take it easy on them the first couple weeks till they adjust.  Be patient and encouraging.  Remember, it takes time to build a new habit.

If getting them to the gym is just not an option then we need to talk other strategies for health. How about diet?  I believe diet is 70 percent of your results.  Yes, diet!  The advantage here is that you can share in a healthy lifestyle together through food and not even have to worry about pulling them out of the house during your own sweat time. Try incorporating this new food change in slowly too. Don’t pick a diet that is so hard at first that they crash and burn after a week or two. Do something that will show results in a 60 to 90 day span. Doing this together can also make it fun and romantic. You can cook together or cook for one another and spend extra time together in the evenings.  Light some candles.

And if you have different ideas on exercise and nutrition that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world.  Nowadays most restaurants cater to both. One gets fried one gets grilled – Not a big deal. But if you have absolutely nothing in common when it comes to health you might try coming to an understanding about it. Although in my experience this relationship difference has been detrimental, why not try to live longer to have more time with your loved ones?!?
